During a recent learning walk, I was so proud to see that not only had the children's handwriting improved greatly, their knowledge of sounds and their ability to segment and spell has increased dramatically.

The children were so proud to show me their books and point out how much they had improved. Well done to our children on the RWI programme in Shacklewell - your progress is amazing!

This half-term, Year 5 has been exploring aspects of computer programming using a microcontroller called a Crumble. By connecting the Crumble - which looks like what you might call a computer chop - to a Chromebook, you can programme attachments like LEDs and motors to respond to a code. By editing the code, you can change which component jumps into action, and for how long. If you add a forever loop, it will follow the programme indefinitely (or until the battery runs out!).

Codes like this will prove useful for anyone exploring computer programming in later life.

We went to see the Volcanoes and Earthquakes exhibition but ended up seeing so much more! We had lots of fun exploring the skeletons, dinosaur's and minibeasts areas and absolutely loved the 1995 Japan earthquake simulator!

As always, the children behaved impeccably - a stranger even complimented them on the OVerground - and their love of learning made me and Ms Hosie burst with pride!

The children in Years 4, 5 and 6 got to be the first to experience this exciting new part of our curriculum on Friday 26th.

Exploring topics like spending, saving, debit cards, and financial planning, the children thoroughly enjoyed thinking differently about money.

Below are some suggested activities for families to do at home, in order to support the Redstart initiative and maybe raise some important conversations with the children too.

We used a torch, a mirror and a target board to find the best angle for the light to hit its target. Based on our findings, we found that light can only travel in a straight line, and any form of reflection can change the direction of travel.

To ensure this experiment was successful, we demonstrated great interpersonal skills by working collaboratively and taking responsibility for our learning.

What a busy week! We have been bringing our RE and history learning to life this week, meeting a faith leader from our local community and teaching our parents all about the Windrush Generation in our sharing assembly.

Last term, we learned all about Islam and objects that are special to Muslims. This term, we are learning about what is important to Jewish people. On Thursday, Rabbi Roni from the Stoke Newington Schul came to talk all about Judaism. We learned that Jewish people sometimes wear special clothing to remind them God is with them. I was proud of the great questions the children asked, and how they handled special objects including a mezuzah and a kippah respectfully and carefully.

After working very hard in rehearsals all week, 2S wowed their sharing assembly audience by presenting all their learning about the Windrush Generation. We said a big thank you to people who have worked in all sorts of professions, and have brought so much to the UK. In particular, we celebrated Mrs Rigg and Caxton Holder, two members of our local community (played by Ariana and Kevin!) The children spoke, sang and danced so confidently. Thank you to all the parents and carers who came and celebrated with us!

Year 4 have made their own examples of the layers of the earth to start their geography topic. They have had a trip to Dalston Library which was a great chance for book talk. This passion for reading has continued in the classroom with their new library books.

In maths, there have been some great opportunities for out of book learning in our fractions topic.

This week we used Cuisenaire rods to represent mixed numbers. We are excited to explore these topics further this half term!

In Autumn 2, Shacklewell enjoyed learning all about how to embrace and value the differences that make each person special and unique in our schoolwide topic, Celebrating Differences.

Key Stage 1 learnt all about the similarities and differences between themselves and why it is our differences that make us all unique and interesting. A Year 1 child said, “I like coming to school as everybody around me is different and that’s fun.”

In Year 2, they learnt all about what makes boys and girls different and why we shouldn’t make assumptions based on gender. They were so excited to tell me all about their learning and that it’s not just boys who love football or girls that love the colour pink.

In Key Stage 2, Year 4 learnt why it is important not to judge a person by how they look and why doing this might lead to a missed opportunity of forming a great friendship! One Year 4 child said we mustn't judge people by how they look as it is ‘cruel and unkind’.

Lastly, Year 5 enjoyed learning all about community and why we should welcome everyone into our community, regardless of their race, gender, sex or age. They couldn’t wait to show me their work and spoke so passionately about how they all feel like our school in one big family. Take a look at the wonderful banners they made!

Today they have advanced from junior programmers to more advanced programming environments. Using their knowledge of programming from Scratch Jr, they applied these to create more complex algorithms. This allowed them to program movement, sound effects and characters.

Each week we hope to build on this knowledge in their Computing lessons developing the skills in:

Create a Task - understand what is needed

Design - what it should do

Code - how it is done

Running the code - what it does

In this session, children learnt about what an orchestra is; how many people are in the BBC Symphony Orchestra (over 100!); where the orchestra travels; and what a normal day looks like as a professional classical musician. The children listened to the musicians play the violin and the viola; created their own song (they chose the theme of Tom and Jerry!); and had the opportunity to ask questions. It was a truly special and unique experience for the children and it has certainly opened our eyes to the many differing careers available to us.

We worked collaboratively to classify objects, observing closely and noting their different properties. The children enjoyed creating a 'museum' of objects, discussing the suitability of materials for their purpose. The children found the idea of a paper house or a chocolate teapot very funny!

Our enthusiasm for science was evident on this week's trip to the CLR James Library, where many children chose to borrow a science book. After our spelling test, we enjoyed some calm reading time. I was proud to hear how excited the children were to share the library books and make recommendations to their friends. This week's polls show that our class favourite genres at the moment are non-fiction, funny books and stories about dinosaurs!

As a team, we decided to launch Playground Pals and we had the privilege of doing so in the first Anti-Bullying Week assembly of the week.

Playground Pals are carefully selected children in the year groups 1-6 who are there to support children who are feeling a little bit low or down in the playground. The well-being ambassadors made it clear to the children that more serious issues must always be reported to the teachers.

The pictures of our Playground Pals are on display in the playgrounds so that children know who they can turn to (and some of the pictures you can see here!). The children also wear bright hi-vis slap-bands so that they can be easily recognised.

Thank you so much to our well-being ambassadors for creating this wonderful idea, and thank you to our Playground Pals for your kindness and support!

In Year 2, they have been learning all about Mosques and their features. They have learnt that it is very important for Muslims to wash before they pray!

A Year 2 child said she 'really enjoy RE as they get to learn about lots of different beliefs that are different to my own'. Year 3 are enjoying their topic on Hinduism. They have been learning all about how Hindu’s show their faith and explored puja, arti and bhajn’s and, if you want to know about Christianity in Britain, just ask Year 4!

In Year 5, the children have been exploring the Five Pillars of Islam and their meaning. A child from 5S said that Muslims fast because 'it helps them to empathise with people who are less fortunate than themselves.' Take a look at the wonderful comic strip from a Year 5 child, too!

Lastly, Year 6 have been learning about a whole host of beliefs over the last few weeks from Hinduism to Christianity and the different denominations. Did you know that Baptist's do not baptise? A Year 6 child told me this is because they want the person to be able to make the choice themselves.

Each student was welcomed into Archaeologist training camp, exploring what an Archaeologist was, their importance in regard to history and how they could classify artefacts that they found. It proved very successful! Not only did the teams follow their training but we managed to find some spectacular items from the stone age. We classified these together and then discussed what the possible uses of each artefact was. I was incredibly proud of their team work and enthusiasm. Well done to all our budding Archaeologists!
