It is amazing to see the progress in reading of our very youngest readers during their Read Write Inc. lessons. During a recent learning walk, I was so proud to see that not only had the children's handwriting improved greatly, their knowledge of sounds and their ability to segment and spell has increased dramatically.
The children were so proud to show me their books and point out how much they had improved. Well done to our children on the RWI programme in Shacklewell - your progress is amazing!
This half-term, Year 5 has been exploring aspects of computer programming using a microcontroller called a Crumble. By connecting the Crumble - which looks like what you might call a computer chop - to a Chromebook, you can programme attachments like LEDs and motors to respond to a code. By editing the code, you can change which component jumps into action, and for how long. If you add a forever loop, it will follow the programme indefinitely (or until the battery runs out!).
Codes like this will prove useful for anyone exploring computer programming in later life.
Year 4 enjoyed a very exciting trip to the Natural History Museum on Friday.
We went to see the Volcanoes and Earthquakes exhibition but ended up seeing so much more! We had lots of fun exploring the skeletons, dinosaur's and minibeasts areas and absolutely loved the 1995 Japan earthquake simulator!
As always, the children behaved impeccably - a stranger even complimented them on the OVerground - and their love of learning made me and Ms Hosie burst with pride!
In Reception, we have been learning all about homes. We have been making homes from a range of materials inside and outside the classroom. We even made our own doll’s house. We are all looking forward to our trip to the Museum of the Home next week, which will be the perfect way to end a wonderful half-term.
Ahead of Internet Safety Day Mr McGrath hosted two parent workshops about e-safety. During the session families explored the Ofcom Child and Parents Media Use survey. They also explored a range of useful websites and resources which can support families to make informed decisions and hold important conversations about technology in the home.

This year the children in Reception to Year 6 are participating in Redstart, a financial education programme. The children in Years 4, 5 and 6 got to be the first to experience this exciting new part of our curriculum on Friday 26th.
Exploring topics like spending, saving, debit cards, and financial planning, the children thoroughly enjoyed thinking differently about money.
Below are some suggested activities for families to do at home, in order to support the Redstart initiative and maybe raise some important conversations with the children too.
